SET
The SETI Institute, The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Life, was formed in 1984 with the aim of understanding the place of life throughout the Universe. This of course involves looking for it elsewhere, on other planets besides Earth, hence the 'Search For' in the title.
So far nothing has been found, which might be a good thing, because going off human history, being visited by a technically superior civilization is not the best experience in the world - ask the Aztecs, the Incas, the guys on Easter Island, the native American Indians, the Australian Aborigines. Granted these cultures were all visited by Europeans; so, as long as your average alien species doesn't have a European outlook on life and a thirst for gold, then we should be ok, otherwise we will all be in deep trouble.
